Working Holidays
This also has nothing to do with the class but maybe with another one. My cousin is a Junior at Furman and over Thanksgiving Break she had to turn in a paper the day before Thanksgiving. She also received an e-mail back from the professor that Friday. She told me that her professor was Indian and that he didn't celebrate Thanksgiving. Do you think that its fair to have to write and turn in a paper over the holidays just because a particular teacher doesn't celebrate that holiday? Did anyone have a situation like this one?

Neil's Question
Do you believe that writers should include all the details in writing to make it come out clearer? Do you even read passages when you don't even know what is going on? This is the author's fault for not giving enough detail. I do believe details are very important. Do you?

Presidency
This topic has really nothing to do with our class, but could be used as a good discussion in the near future. I want to know what your thoughts are about the presidency? Do you think Bush, if he could, should serve another term? Also, what do you think about the candidates running for office now? Again, I know we haven't discussed this in class, but I felt like it would be a thinking posts and I'm sure everyone would like to voice their opinion on the presidencial situation.

Holly's Question
Research studies show that television can have a negative impact on children. They have seen it effects the way children behave, such as repeating something they have heard or seen, and sometimes this may inappropriate behavior. Do you believe that television has a positive or negative impact on children, why or why not? Do you think that children should have a limit on what they watch and how much television they watch at a time?

Research Paper
As the semester comes to a close, we are all scrambling around taking tests, writing papers, finishing assignments and studying for finals. But we all need to prioritize our time to fit everything in so we can get the best grade. What are some of the topics you found for your final research paper in this class? What are some of the strategies that you use to juggle all of the work you have? Do you have any specific advice for those who always seem to put everything off until the last minute? Oh, and how excited are you to have almost a month off of school for Christmas break?!?

Art
You can find art anywhere. Every culture has their own art, usually about the most important thing to those kind of people. There is high and low art Davinci would be considered high art and, A student at LR's art would most likely be considered low art. Most high art is art that has gone through the test of time and survived. Some art you cannot explain at all but it interests you because it is so different. Today in modern art people are even using their bodies as canvases.Does modern art change the way that people look at the world today? Does art have to pass the test of time to be High art?

Gender
In class we are now hitting the topic of Gender, through gender you see many different things. But we a people are different, compared to the 'sterotype' people normally gives us. They say when you go into a room for an interview, the interviewer has made there decision about you in the first 30 seconds, if they like you or not. From the handshake, to what you are wearing, you are judged. The appearance has alot to do with you, because of Gender. Mowing Service, would you expect to see a woman outside with a lawn mower, just asking to mow your grass for a reasonable price. No, but the fact is it is out there, a news story this summer I particularly remember is about women mowing grass. In Charlotte there is a lawn mowing bussiness where a girl gets outside and mows your grass in a bikini. Thus I claim Safety Hazard, no protection if you hit something and it it hits the girl, but I am not saying I wouldnt pay. The fact is, we as Gender species claim one another completely opposite. But yet, we work in the same jobs, women are police officiers, men are in the cleaning services. Women are doctors, and men are hairstylist. Can you name some other forms of jobs, that now are spread between both sexes, but 40 years ago you wouldnt hear of? Whats you opinion of woman in 'the mens' workplace, and men in 'womens' workplace? In some cases does Gender over rule the other no matter what? Should Gender matter when you are in a hiring situation? Please Explain.

Tell My Horse
We have been reading the book Tell My Horse, which is a guide to the authors personal experience in Haiti. Out of the chapters we have already read, what is one theme or message that catches your eye? How does Hurston portray that message?

Speeches
Today in English we talked about speeches and listened to a view. Personally I like giving speeches and I don't get nervous. Some people studder or rock back and forth and feel very uncomfortable saying speeches. There are even people who have a fear of speaking in front of people which is actually a phobia called glossophobia. Glossophobia characterizes a person to be anit-social. Do you believe that people who are glossophobic are all anti-social? Do you think speeches are necessary? How do you feel when you say a speech? Do we really need to learn how to say speeches even if our career does not use them at all? What do you think?

Krik Krak and Mts. Beyond Mts
This past week we started reading Krik Krak. And today in class we were discussing the comparisons and differences between the two books, Kirk Krak and Mountains beyond Mountains. Over the summer we were supposed to read Mountains beyond Mountains which is a non-fiction book, and Krik Krak which is a fiction book. They have different writing styles and other differences but also comparisons such as they're both talking about the hard life in Haiti. But overall with the two books we have just read, which book did you like the most and why?

krik krak
We have just started reading Krik Krak in class. These short stories seem to give a vision of what Haiti is really like. The first four stories seemed to be really personal and leave an effect on the reader. So my question is, What do you think of Krik Krak so far?

Heros
Last week we focused on heroes and had to write a paper on it. But what makes a hero? I mean everyones opinion may differ like one person's opinion might be they have to have a special talent or something. Another person might argue this by saying it's just a normal person that provides for their families just to get by. What I'm asking is what do you think makes a hero and who applies to this description?
High School English vs. College English
High and school and college english, from what I can tell so far have so many differences. If you think back, in a high school english class most of the time was spent on grammar up until senior year. In college it is expected that you are strong with your wording, punctuation, and placement of verbs and adverbs. It is not emphasized at all. I have noticed already that freshman english is going to be mostly reading and writing papers. This was just a thought i felt like putting on the table. Do you agree or disagree?

Racism
Today in class we talked about race and ethnicity. We also talked about how everyone is stereotyped by someone at some point and time. I know that I have stereotyped many people before in my life. There are also people that probably stereotype people on this campus. But, the question I have is about Racism in our everyday life. Does everyone in our society have some racism in them somewhere?

College Relationships
The three college relationships that we talked in class, i think apply to everyone. Some students may apply to one or more than one at the same time. Lately i have been observing relationships among campus and i see that there are a lot of boys and girls "going out". There are also a lot of just friends relationships, where the boy and the girl are in the "just talking" phase of a relationship. What have you observed about the different types of relationships on campus?

The life without parents
| The life without parents in college! The thing about college to me is that I don't have any parents to wake me up in the morning, make me do my homework, make me go to bed early to get rest for school, or even cook and clean for me. Also, they cant even make me come in early if I decide to stay out late. I like life without parents in college but I still miss them. How do you feel about life without parents while in college. |

Writing about Space
Think about your experience in trying to navigate public space--- either familiar or unfamiliar to you. In what ways does your environment control your actions? Is this a necessity?
